Carved stone object

This carved stone object is one of several elaborate stone objects found at the site of the Neolithic village of Skara Brae on Orkney. The object dates from 3100 to 2500 BC.

The object was carefully shaped, pointed at one end and mushroom-shaped at the other.

Several unusually-shaped carved stone objects were found at Skara Brae. Many functions for them have been suggested. Whatever their function, they were clearly prestigious possessions, symbols of power.
