This pendant, made by drilling a hole through an animal's tooth, is one of a number found at the Neolithic settlement site of Skara Brae on Orkney. It was worn sometime between 3500 and 2000 BC, probably valued as an amulet.

Curved tooth pendant with perforation at the thick end, from Skara Brae

Magic and superstition were an integral part of everyday life. Charms and amulets were commonly carried, although sometimes it is difficult to identify them as such or interpret their symbolism.
