Pin

This whalebone pin was found at the neolithic settlement site of Skara Brae on Orkney. It was carved in a phallic shape, perhaps for use as a fertility amulet. The pin dates between 3500 and 2000 BC.

Neolithic bulbed pin of whalebone from Skara Brae

Magic and superstition were an integral part of everyday life. Charms and amulets were commonly carried, although sometimes it is difficult to identify them as such or interpret their symbolism.
