From Skara Brae, Orkney

Pin
Add to album

This bone pin was found at the neolithic settlement site of Skara Brae on Orkney. It was probably valued as an amulet sometime between 3500 and 2000 BC.

The pin is broken near its bulbous end. The form of the object suggests that it was a phallic symbol.

Magic and superstition were an integral part of everyday life. Charms and amulets were commonly carried, although sometimes it is difficult to identify them as such or interpret their symbolism.
