Pieces pf silver plates

These three pieces, from two silver plates, were found at Traprain Law in East Lothian. They were part of a hoard containing over 150 silver objects, mainly tableware, buried between 410 and 425 AD. Most of the objects were fragmentary.

All three pieces are inlaid with niello. The lower two, from the same plate, are gilt and ornamented with human heads and foliage below a beaded rim. An obscure inscription is scratched on the back. The upper piece has a geometric decoration.

The largest group of objects in the Traprain treasure was table silver. Many objects, especially bowls and plates, have beaded edging, a common technique used on late Roman food vessels.
