Fragment of a glass cup

This fragment of a painted glass cup was found at the native hillfort settlement of Traprain Law in East Lothian. It is a quality Roman object, one of a number found there, acquired by gift or trade sometime between 80 and 200 AD.

Fragment of painted glass from a gladiator cup, from Traprain Law

The large, defended hillfort at Traprain Law was an important site in Iron Age Scotland. A large number of Roman and native objects have been found from there, showing that the native population prospered in its contacts with the Romans.
