Worked bone roughouts

These worked bone roughouts were found at Foshigarry on North Uist in the Outer Hebrides and at Westray on Rousay in Orkney. The one at the top is for an unknown object, while the bottom one was a roughout for making bone beads.

Both objects were made from animal bones. The one at the top has been partially cut across in two places. The one at the bottom has six cut marks at fairly regular intervals.

For much of Scotland's history, people have made extensive use of bone and antler for many objects used in daily life. The raw materials are easy to come by, and fairly easy to work, producing light, strong, flexible and resilient objects.
