A linchpin is a pin inserted through an axle to keep a wheel in place. This iron example was found at Laws Hill at Monifieth in Angus. It dates from between the 3rd century BC and 1st century AD.

Entire carts or wagons from this period rarely survive. Often all that is left are metal fittings and bindings.
