From Keiss, Caithness

Disc of sandstone
Add to album

This sandstone disc was found at a broch at Keiss in Caithness. Its function is unknown but it may have been used as a playing piece. It dates from sometime between 200 BC and 800 AD.

The disc has lines incised on both sides.

The remains of four brochs survive at Keiss, an unusual concentration of this distinctive form of architecture. Finds include a range of native every-day objects, as well as the occasional Roman import, passed as gifts far north of the Roman frontier.
