Lamp

This sandstone lamp was found at Okstrow Broch at Birsay in Orkney. It was used to provide light inside the broch, sometime between 200 BC and 400 AD.

The lamp shows marks of burning from its use.

Early lamps were generally carved from stone. The hollow was filled with oil on which a wick floated.
