Lamp

This sandstone lamp was found at Skirza Broch in Caithness. It was used to provide light inside the broch, sometime between 200 BC and 400 AD.

The oval-shaped lamp has an oval depression carved at the top, with another oval, but slightly less deep depression, at one end.

Early lamps were generally carved from stone. The hollow was filled with oil on which a wick floated.
