Small iron tool with a bone handle

This small iron tool with a bone handle was found at Ness Broch in Caithness. It was used sometime between 200 BC and 200 AD.

The handle was made from a cylindrical piece of bone. The iron tool is very corroded and possibly incomplete.

From an early period, people in Scotland used objects made from bone, antler and similar materials in almost every area of daily life. Bone and antler were easy to find and easy to work, producing light, strong and flexible objects.
