This head of an iron hammer was found at the site of the Roman fort at Castlecary in Stirlingshire. It is from a claw hammer, and was used between 140 and 165 AD.

The hammer head was forged from a single piece of iron. It has a rectangular striking end and a pair of claws at the other. One claw is incomplete, but otherwise the hammer is in good condition.

The Roman army employed professional carpenters for the many woodworking tasks involved in building and maintaining structures and in providing equipment for the troops. This is a specialised carpentry tool, used in the same way as a modern claw hammer.
