Spatula

This Roman wooden spatula was found at Castlecary in Stirlingshire. The find is exceptional - due to poor preservation the simple wooden utensils and cooking implements of the lower ranks of the Roman army are rarely found.

The spade-like spoon has a thick handle and shallow scoop.

Officers in the Roman army possessed better cooking and serving equipment than the lower ranks.
