This iron nail is one of a large number found at the site of the Roman fort at Inchtuthil in Perthshire. It was used between 79 and 87 AD.

Twenty iron nails from Inchtuthil

Often the surviving nails on Roman sites are the only indications of woodworking, partly because of decay and partly because of the value of wood. When the army abandoned Inchtuthil, they took the wood and left behind the nails.
