This stone carved in the shape of a pine cone was found at Inveresk in Midlothian. It was from a grave memorial stone of a Roman soldier who was buried between 142 and 158 AD.

The occupying Roman army, with its mixture of soldiers from various parts of the Empire, brought foreign burial traditions with it. High-ranking members of the army commissioned stone grave monuments. The pine cone was a symbol of immortality.
