Tombstone

This tombstone was found near the site of the Roman fort at Mumrills in Stirlingshire. It marked the grave of a native soldier belonging to the Brigantes tribe from northern England. He was buried between 140 and 165 AD.

The inscription on the tombstone unusually provides many details about the dead soldier. He was named Nectovelius, his father's name was Vindex, he was a member of the Brigantes tribe, and he served in the 2nd Cohort of Thracians.

Each Roman legion was divided into ten cohorts, each of which was composed of a century of 80 men. This cohort was recruited primarily from men from Thracia, northeast of Greece, but clearly also had attracted native recruits.
