Tile (Fragment)
Add to album

This fragmentary roof tile, also known as an imbrex, is one of several found at Carpow in Perthshire, with the stamp of Legio VI. It was made between 208 and 211 AD when Carpow was a major base.

The incomplete inscription, 'Leg VI VIC..', would originally have read 'Leg VI Vic BPF' which stands for, 'Legio 6 Victrix Britannica Pia Fidelis' ['The Victorious 6th legion Britannica, dutiful and loyal'].

Tiles for walls, roofs and hypocausts were often stamped with the name of the legion which made them. This tile provides direct evidence of the presence of the VI Legion in Scotland.
