Bench support
Add to album

This stone support for a bench, here pictured with a modern seat, was found at the site of the Roman fort at Mumrills in Stirlingshire. It was used in the changing room of the bath house in the fort, sometime in the 2nd century AD.

The support is plain, with simple mouldings at the top and bottom.

The heat and moisture in a Roman bath house would have made stone furniture essential. Such rooms and furnishings would have been a source of wonder to the native population.
