Strap end

This bronze strap end was found at the site of the Roman fort at Mumrills in Stirlingshire. Originally it was coated with silver or tin to give it a shiny appearance. The strap end was used sometime between 140 and 165 AD.

The strap end is somewhat corroded now. The strap would have fitted into the broader end.

Metal strap ends were attached to leather straps, both for horse harness and human belt fittings, to protect the ends of the straps. The leather rarely survives, but the metal fittings, often ornamented, are fairly common.
