Tile

This tile was found at the site of the Roman fort at Mumrills in Stirlingshire. It was probably made locally for or by the army between 140 and 165 AD.

The tile preserves the paw print of a wild cat that ran over it while the clay was damp.

The Romans used tiles and bricks for roofing and internal fittings. Tiles were laid out to dry before being fired in the kiln. Sometimes decorative stamps were pressed into the damp clay before firing.
