This sandstone basin was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

The basin has a flat base and two projecting corbel-shaped lugs, one broken on top and redressed. There is a small flat depression on the rounded lip.

A number of objects associated with food preparation and eating were preserved at Newstead. These range from simple, everyday objects belonging to the low-ranking soldiers, to exotic and expensive wares imported and owned by the officers.
