Fragment of a terracotta chimney

This fragment of a terracotta chimney was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

The fragment is from a circular fitting which had a square or rectangular hole cut in the side.

Hot air and smoke dispersed from Roman buildings through chimneys. However, few chimneys are known, probably because they rarely survive in a complete state, and many fragments are misidentified.
