Grinding bowl
Add to album

This ceramic grinding bowl, of a type known as a mortarium, was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used in the preparation of food between 80 and 180 AD.

The grinding bowl is shallow, with a strongly moulded rim for ease of gripping. It contains grits on the inside surface to aid in grinding.

Excavations at Newstead have revealed much about the layout and daily life in Roman forts in Scotland.
