Pot and lid
Add to album

This ceramic cooking pot with sandstone lid was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It had been reused as a cremation urn between 80 and 100 AD.

The pot has a broad band of lattice decoration around the body. It is sealed with a sandstone lid. When buried, the pot was placed on a sandstone slab and protected by four other slabs which formed a tent-like structure over it.

Roman burials, either inhumations or cremations, are rare in Scotland. Cremation was the norm, although foreign auxiliaries and native recruits retained their own burial practices.
