From Newstead, Roxburghshire
Add to albumThis ceramic plate was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was imported from Roman Gaul between 80 and 100 AD.
The plate is of Pompeian red ware, manufactured in Gaul.
The Roman army obtained supplies from three zones: locally, within the Roman province of Britannia, or further afield in the Roman empire. Officers in the army often brought fine wares with them to Scotland or purchased imported pieces.
