Basketry (Fragment)
Add to album

This fragment of basketry and another organic material were found in a box with fragments of rope at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It provides rare evidence of baskets in use between 80 and 180 AD.

The plaiting technique can be determined from the fragments, although their original use cannot.

Plant and animal fibres were used to produce a wide range of common products in addition to cloth, including nets, basketry, string and rope. Few examples survive, and of those which do, there is rarely enough to determine the size, shape or function.
