These two small fragments of cloth in plain weave were found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. They date from between 80 and 180 AD.

Two textile fragments from Newstead

Textiles rarely survive. Although the Roman army would have needed a great deal of cloth for clothing, blankets and other objects, these fragments are some of the few bits of evidence from the Roman forts in Scotland which attest to this use.
