Mallet head

This wooden head from a mallet was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used between 80 and 100 AD.

The rectangular, square-sectioned mallet head was made from a single piece of wood. The remains of the wooden handle in the central hole are also preserved.

Like mallets today - which this one resembles - this mallet could have been used for various purposes, from banging in tent pegs to inserting wedges in a tree trunk, and for driving a chisel.
