Bobbin
Add to album

This wooden bobbin was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. Thread was wound on it, for use then in sewing or weaving, sometime between 80 and 100 AD.

The wood has shrunk as the bobbin dried out after its discovery.

Clothes were needed by soldiers in the Roman camps, and some were clearly supplied locally. From the fort at Newstead spindles and spindle whorls for spinning wool into thread, bobbins to wrap the thread around and weaving combs have all been found.
