Helmet mounts (fragments)
Add to album

These bronze fragments of mounts for a parade helmet were found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. They date from between 80 and 180 AD.

The irregularly shaped fragments were hammered to create wavy lines on the upper surface in high relief.

Roman cavalry units held tournaments where they put on spectacular displays. The cavalrymen wore fancy helmets which covered the face as well as the head. The pattern on this helmet cannot be reconstructed, but it would have been quite ornate.
