Helmet cheek piece (Piece)

This cheek piece for a helmet, of iron overlaid with bronze, was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It formed part of the equipment of a member of the auxiliary cavalry.

The cheek piece is fragmentary, and broken in two. It has raised decoration, with what appears to be two legs of a human figure in the centre.

The helmets of the auxiliary cavalry differed from those of the legionary soldiers. Many consisted of a close-fitting iron cap and a neckguard, sheathed in bronze, sometimes with bronze bosses attached.
