Strap mount
Add to album

This silvered bronze strap mount was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was made between 80 and 100 AD and was used to decorate a horse harness.

The symmetrically-shaped mount has two rectangular ends, a pierced central disc, and two rounded, triangular linking sections. The ends and middle sections have raised ornamentation, plated with silver or tin.

Excavations at Newstead have revealed much about the layout and daily life in Roman camps in Scotland. Some of the finer objects such as this were probably used in tournaments or ceremonies rather than fighting.
