Stud

This bronze stud for a belt was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It is still attached to a piece of leather. The stud dates from between 80 and 180 AD.

The stud is flat-headed, with a moulding at the edge.

Belts were an essential item of clothing for a soldier. Belt buckles, strap ends, and metal studs, some quite elaborate, survive more often than the leather.
