This bronze pendant was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. Dating from between 80 and 180 AD, it was hung from a horse harness as decoration. It would have been suspended from a harness junction.

The much-corroded pendant has a circular upper section, with a loop on top. The lower attached section is damaged. The surface was plated with silver or tin to give a shiny appearance.

Excavations at Newstead have revealed much about the layout and daily life in Roman camps in Scotland. Some of the finer objects such as this were probably used in tournaments or ceremonies rather than fighting.
