Strap fitting

This hinged bronze strap fitting was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It formed part of the armour known as lorica segmentata, worn by a legionary soldier sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

The strap fitting is corroded.

Lorica segmentata was made up of iron strips mounted on leather straps inside, and fastened on the outside with bronze buckles, hooks, hinges and leather straps. Larger plates to cover shoulders, chest and back were attached to the rest of the armour.
