Junction loop

This silvered bronze junction loop was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was made between 80 and 100 AD and was used as part of a horse harness.

The terminal is made of two rectangular sections. It is now bent, but the thinner section originally formed a loop to clip onto a ring, with a strap fastened to the decorated portion. The other section bears traces of silver or tin plating.

Excavations at Newstead have revealed much about the layout and daily life in Roman camps in Scotland. Some of the finer objects such as this were probably used in tournaments or ceremonies rather than fighting.
