From Newstead, Roxburghshire

Strap end
Add to album

This bronze strap end was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. Unusually, a fragment of the leather strap is also preserved at the top. It was probably part of a soldier's clothing, worn sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

Bronze strap terminal with some leather remaining, from Newstead

Excavations at Newstead have revealed much about the layout, daily life and equipment in Roman camps in Scotland. Little evidence of clothing survives, but occasionally strap ends or even leather fragments are preserved.
