This bronze belt plate was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort of Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

The belt plate is ornamented with a lion in relief. There are traces of plating with a white substance.

Excavations at Newstead have revealed much about the layout, daily life and equipment in Roman camps in Scotland. Belts were an essential item of clothing for a soldier. The fittings were often quite elaborate.
