Rein guide from a yoke

This rein guide from a yoke, also known as a terret, was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It dates from between 80 and 100 AD.

The corrosion obscures some of the ornamentation of the rein guide.

Entire carts or wagons from this period rarely survive. Often all that is left are metal fittings and bindings, such as the harness fittings which attached a yoke to the harness.
