From Newstead, Roxburghshire

Pendant
Add to album

This bronze pendant was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. Dating from between 80 and 180 AD, it was hung from a horse harness as decoration. It would have been suspended from a harness junction.

The corroded pendant is a pointed oval shape. It has an upper circular disc with a loop at the top. The bottom of the pendant tapers and then ends in a knob.

Excavations at Newstead have revealed much about the layout and daily life in Roman camps in Scotland. Some of the finer objects at Newstead were probably used in tournaments or ceremonies rather than fighting.
