From Newstead, Roxburghshire

Pendant
Add to album

This brass pendant was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. Dating from between 80 and 100 AD, it was hung from a horse harness as decoration. It would have been suspended from a harness junction.

The pendant is leaf-shaped with a knob at the bottom, and a suspension loop and two rivet holes at the top.

Excavations at Newstead have revealed much about the layout and daily life in Roman camps in Scotland. Some of the finer objects at Newstead, such as this one, were probably used in tournaments or ceremonies rather than fighting.
