This bronze pendant was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was probably hung from a harness sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

The pendant is in the shape of a crescent moon, with one end incomplete.

Some pendants hung from Roman harnesses are purely decorative, but others, like this one, may have also been used as an amulet. The crescent symbol was believed by the Romans to have power as a charm.
