Pendants and harness junction

These three silvered bronze pendants and one silvered bronze harness junction (also known as a phalera) were found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. They were used on harnesses between 80 and 100 AD.

The elaborate pendants have the remains of decoration in niello.

Harness equipment could be utilitarian or highly ornate. Elaborate and decorative items like these, worn on the harnesses, displayed the owner's wealth and status. They were probably used in Roman tournaments or ceremonies.
