Strap terminal

This bronze strap terminal was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was made between 80 and 100 AD and was used to protect the end of the horse harness strap.

The terminal has a square plate towards the end, ornamented with grooves and mouldings. It is finished with an elongated knob. The dark-coloured areas were originally decorated with a coating of silver.

Excavations at Newstead have revealed much about the layout and daily life in Roman camps in Scotland. Some of the finer objects at Newstead, such as this one, were probably used in tournaments or ceremonies rather than fighting.
