Harness Junction

This brass harness junction was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was part of the main harness junction on horse harness used by the auxiliary cavalry sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

Brass junction loop from Newstead

The harnesses of Roman cavalrymen were decorated with a range of mounts and pendants. Some of the finer examples were probably used in tournaments or ceremonies rather than fighting.
