Junction loop

This brass harness junction was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was part of the main harness junction on a horse harness used by the auxiliary cavalry sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

Brass junction loop from Newstead

The harnesses of Roman cavalrymen were decorated with a range of mounts and pendants. Some of the finer examples were probably used in tournaments or ceremonies rather than fighting.
