This bronze clip was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was made between 80 and 100 AD as part of a horse harness. It fastened a leather strap to a strap distributor.

The loop held a ring to which several clips were attached. The clip has five perforations for studs.

Excavations at Newstead have revealed much about the layout and daily life in Roman camps in Scotland. Some of the finer objects at Newstead, such as this one, were probably used in tournaments or ceremonies rather than fighting.
