Fragment of a prick spur

This fragment of a bronze prick spur was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

The spur has one end missing and is quite corroded. A portion of a leather thong is preserved at one end.

The Roman cavalry needed a range of equipment for its horses, some for everyday use and some for ceremonies. Many of the auxiliary troops used local styles of equipment in their harness fittings.
