Fragment of a a headstall

A headstall fits over a horse's muzzle to prevent it opening its mouth and resisting the bridle. This iron fragment of a headstall was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire.

Fragment of an iron headstall, from Newstead, Roxburghshire

Finds of horseshoes and harness and bridle fittings provide evidence of the importance of horses from an early period. They were used in transport from around 1000 BC (and possibly earlier).
